Let’s Talk PvP
The PvP release is finally here and will soon be available to all players level 10 and above! Let’s talk about what that means for the state of the game.
OG Battle Nations used PV values to match opponents with similar army strength; how will the new matchmaking work?
Matchmaking will use a ranked ELO system behind the scenes with some additional limits such as limited-level difference matchmaking. This means that once your internal rank settles after playing a few fights, you should generally be matched against players of similar strength.
Everyone’s initial ELO (or internal rank) will be calculated based on player level and a function of unit strength, which is a rough approximation of player PvP strength. Even if your initial rank is inaccurate, it should settle after the first few matches and get you into competitive games based on your skill level and army strength.
Medals
How does the rank system work?
Our new Medal System will function as the “ladder” of PvP. All players start with 0 medals, and win/lose them as games are played. Medals range from 0 to 2500, with different tiers and medal floors at increments of 500. The medal system will determine the SP multiplier and gold rewards you get from PvP games.
Medals are tied to your internal ELO. If you have a higher ELO than your medals, you’ll gain more medals when you win, and lose fewer when you lose. For players bloodthirsty enough to climb to the top of the ladder past 2500 medals, your underlying ELO will be revealed so players can directly see the best PvP player in the game!
This dual-layered system is set up to make it easier for all players to progress to higher tiers, with tier floors to protect your progress, but also ensure that matchmaking is done fairly.
PvP Rewards
PvP will grant gold, pooled SP and REQ points, which unlock a variety of rewards like resources, units, cosmetics and more! For the initial season, the rank multipliers are as follows:
| Rank (Medals) | Pooled SP Multiplier | Gold |
| 0-499 | 1.00x | 1500 |
| 500-999 | 1.25x | 3000 |
| 1000-1499 | 1.50x | 4500 |
| 1500-1999 | 1.75x | 6000 |
| 2000-2499 | 2.00x | 7500 |
| 2500 | 2.25x | 9000 |
Using level 65 players as a reference, the average PvP match duration of a fully completed match from friendly games is ~2.5 minutes (excluding queue time and setup phase), and the average SP of total enemies killed is 13 Pooled SP (before multipliers) that can be applied to any units that you want to rank up.
The REQ Pass
The second progression reward coming to PvP is the REQ Pass. Every iteration of the pass will last the duration of the PvP season (6 weeks). Players will receive 150 REQ points per win and 50 per loss. There will be a daily reward multiplier of 4x points for the first 3 wins of the day.
The pass will also include a reasonable amount of resources to help smooth early-game progression. The goal is to keep the premium pass as a boost with special cosmetics without giving it a competitive advantage in PvP and future PvE events. As we collect more information, we may adjust reward types and amounts for future seasons. Also, please keep in mind that we want the REQ pass to be an additional source of rewards alongside future events that we’ll be adding back in the near future, rather than the only source of rewards.
